ICYF successfully convened its side event titled “A Stolen Future: Youth Under Occupation, War, and Protracted Violence” on 3 March 2026, on the margins of the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
Organized in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Türkiye and the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the United Nations Office in Geneva, the event brought together diplomats, experts, and civil society representatives to examine the devastating impact of occupation and protracted conflict on young people.
The discussion shed light on the grave violations affecting youth in conflict settings — including displacement, destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, disruption of education, and long-term socio-economic consequences that undermine their right to development and dignity.
In his opening remarks, ICYF President H.E. Taha Ayhan underscored the centrality of education in safeguarding the future of young generations.
The panel further highlighted the urgent need for accountability, protection of civilian infrastructure, and stronger international commitment to uphold international humanitarian and human rights law — particularly with regard to the rights of youth living under occupation and in situations of war in Gaza and Occupied Palestinian Territories .
Through this side event, ICYF once again reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that youth voices are heard within international human rights mechanisms and that no young person is left behind in times of crisis.
